Situational Leadership
Using Ken Blanchard and Paul Hersey’s model
for Situational Leadership, participants learn how to
analyze the needs of a situation and adopt the most
appropriate leadership style. Participants will discuss that
there is no one right or better style, effective leaders are
versatile in being able to access varying styles depending
on the situation. Styles that are discussed:
-
Directing:
Participants will discuss how “directing” leaders define the
roles and tasks and supervise them closely. In this style
decisions are made by the leader and announced, so
communication is largely one-way.
-
Coaching: Participants
will discuss how leaders define roles and tasks, while
seeking ideas and suggestions from others. In this style decisions
remain the leader's prerogative, but communication is much
more two-way.
-
Supporting: Participants will discuss how
leaders pass day-to-day decisions, such as task allocation
and processes, to others. In this style the leader
facilitates and takes part in decisions, but control is with
others.
-
Delegating: Participants will discuss how leaders
are still involved in decisions and problem-solving, but
control is with others. In this style others decide when and
how the leader will be involved.
